Dr. Chris Van der Walt
He obtained his post-graduate degree (MMed in Plastic Surgery) with distinction from the University of Stellenbosch and also completed the College of Plastic Surgery examinations. He is a fellow of the College of Plastic Surgery of South Africa (FC Plast (SA)) and a full member of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa (APRSSA). He trained under Professor Zeeman and Professor Graewe. Professor Zeeman pioneered Cranio-facial surgery and microsurgery in South Africa. Professor Graewe has a special interest in breast reconstruction, cosmetic surgery and Cranio-facial surgery. Both completed several international fellowships and spent time training in Australia, USA, France, Germany and Taiwan. Dr Van der Walt has special interests in oculoplastic (eyelid) and cancer surgery, especially cancers involving the breast, soft tissue, skin, and head and neck. He is actively involved in providing cleft lip and palate surgery to many children with the help of the Smile Foundation. His cosmetic interests range from non- invasive to surgical modalities. He is especially fond of nose and breast surgery. In addition to his private practice Dr Van der Walt works as a Consultant Plastic Surgeon at the Port Elizabeth Metropole Hospital Complex performing reconstructive surgery procedures for patients that are unable to afford private healthcare.
Awards 2006 Best clinical research paper by the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa (APRSSA) 2008 Runner up, best clinical research paper by APRSSA. Best Published paper, APRSSA Best Surgical researcher by the University of Stellenbosch (US) Best under 35 researcher, US Best Post-Graduate Masters student in the Health Sciences Faculty, US 2011 Excellence award for my work with cleft lip and palate patients in the Eastern Cape. ECDOH 2013 Rotary Club, Vocational Service Award for work done with children with cleft abnormalities.
