Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Overview

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Upper eyelids often appear ‘heavy’ with excess skin and puffiness. This can make us look tired and obliterates the eyelash line. As we age we develop ‘bags’ below the lower eyelids. This happens as the cheek descends and the fat below the eye bulges.

Procedure

During a blepharoplasty, fat deposits in the upper eyelid are removed or repositioned, muscles are tightened and excess skin is removed. This is done via an incision along the natural crease on the eyelid.

If the procedure involves the lower eyelid, an incision is made just below the lower lash line and excess skin is removed, with the bulging fat being repositioned to fill the hollow under the eyelid. This was often previously removed, but can resulted in hollow looking eye. That is why we prefer fat repositioning. The scarring in this region is excellent.

Anaesthetic

Usually under local anaesthetic with light sedation in our procedure room.
